Mike Clelland's
Research on
Owls and UFOs

“I am now at the point where I feel that something far more bizarre and far more complex is going on than simply metal spaceships filledwith scientists. This is an assumption, and I am convinced it is far too simplistic”.
[Mike Clelland]
The fact that “owls” play a role in UFO and abduction scenarios should be known to the informed reader at least since Strieber's COMMUNION.
Regardless of this, the topic as its own complex never occupied me, in contrast to Mike Clelland, who researched based on his own experiences with UFOs, aliens, and “owls” and has written a book [The Messengers: Owls, Synchronicity and the UFO Abductee] on the subject in addition to a blog [http://hiddenexperience.blogspot.com].
I was amazed by the high number of accounts; the author reports that he has heard and/or read about thousands of incidents [p. 8] and receives a new report via email roughly daily [sic], which is probably related to the fact that his name comes up first in the Google search option “UFOs & Owls”! [p. 22]
This refers not only to “owls” that are decried within ufology as “screen memories”—for instance, because they are absurdly large, behave absurdly, or appear in absurd places like UFOs—but also seemingly “normal” animals that behave no less absurdly than their “artificial” counterparts.
Absurd Encounters and Shapeshifters
The author visited an abductee support group in Nevada. About 20 people were involved. A young man asked those present if they had ever had experiences with “owls.” Everyone raised their hands.
He reported on a nighttime overland drive. At the side of the road, he noticed an owl about 120 cm tall looking at him angrily. He stopped. In doing so, he noticed that it was wearing boots [sic]—Cosmic Jokers? [p. 28]
The largest owl known to the author is the GREAT GRAY [Name Game?], but it only grows to 84 centimeters and usually does not wear boots! [p. 31]
Several cases are listed in the book in which “giant owls” standing on the road usher in abduction scenarios. There are abductees who are convinced that the beings do not use “screen memories” but can actually change their shape.
Such “shapeshifters” are legion, for example, in the lore of the Amerindians. Ufologist Alan Cavines reported an interesting case to Clelland in which not "owls," but "deer" played a role:
The witness woke up at night due to a flash of light. She got up and stepped outside her house. Standing there were three typical "Greys." After staring at each other for a while, the strangers "morphed" into deer and moved away. [p. 37]
If "aliens" are shapeshifters, do they also camouflage themselves as cryptids? Regarding physical mass, there is not much difference between a full-grown deer and, say, a Bigfoot!
Of course, I know "spatial theory"—small things cannot take on the shape and mass of large things—but who knows what tricks the "others" employ?
The OZ Factor and Uncanny Pursuers
It is interesting to note that such encounters take place in a very strange, "ultra-quiet" atmosphere that Clelland correctly attributes to the OZ factor—see the tags under this post!
In some encounters, the UFO aspect does not seem to be the decisive factor. In one case, a young mother was startled in the evening because the dog barked.
She stepped outside the house and discovered an "owl" about 150 cm tall standing on the driveway. Since the woman was hardly taller than the intruder, she quickly went back into the house. There she made a sketch. The face of the "animal" looked similar to that of a "Grey"! [p. 39]
Parallel "owl sightings" occurred in the UK in 1976! Individual scenarios provide the material for horror movies: Alan Cavines is a UFO researcher and abductee.
During an overland drive in his car, an "owl" flew alongside him, staring at him the whole time and twisting its head unnaturally to do so. In parallel, he investigated the case of a woman with a similar experience.
A "deer" ran alongside her car with the same unnatural head posture as the "owl" and stared at her continuously. Both cars were traveling at over 55 mph, which the pursuers could easily keep up with! [p. 46ff]
The Anecdote about Richard Nixon and Jackie Gleason
Clelland has included an interesting anecdote in his book. Ex-President Richard Nixon was a big fan of the American actor Jackie Gleason. They became friends and spent a lot of time together playing golf or doing other activities.
The actor's memoirs reveal that Nixon bundled him into a car one night because he had something important to show him. Together they drove to Homestead Air Force Base (Florida).
With presidential vehemence, Nixon prevailed—they wanted to deny him and his companion access to the facility—and so they managed to get onto the base. Both then went to a building where the bodies of three small "extraterrestrials" were allegedly located, who had died in Roswell in 1947. [p. 59ff]
Faulty Screen Memories and Telepathic Manipulation
The thing with "screen memories" does not always seem to work: A witness who was 5 years old at the time had a bizarre experience with a flying metal ball in 1957:
She was in her room when the said object appeared outside the window with an integrated lens that "blinked" like an eye. The girl screamed for her mother.
Then she heard a voice in her head whispering to her not to be afraid. It—the ball—was nothing more than a friendly owl [sic]. The girl ventured closer to the window when the "would-be owl" moved away at high speed. [p. 222]
Apparently, the camouflage mode failed in that case and the "owl" appeared in its actual form! "Artist's bad luck" or "Cosmic Jokers"?
Strieber suspects that the "aliens" also use real owls, which they manipulate telepathically and use as flying "night eyes." This would explain, for example, why real owls so often sit outside the windows of abductees for hours on end, staring at them, or follow them all day long—the strangers see through their eyes! [p. 69]
Owls seem to like "strange" times to make an appearance. One witness received a visit at 4:44 [p. 85], another "owl" appeared at 11:11 [p. 93], 3:33 or 12:34 are also popular [p. 94].
Although I had previously assumed that I knew the events surrounding the Hudson Valley wave, the reference to various bizarre "owl incidents" at that time amazed me! [p. 102] I suspect in connection with the over 70 CE4s reported at the time!
The Name Game and Mythological Parallels
The NAME GAME seems to really rock the "owls"! Clelland noticed that an exorbitant number of "owl observers" bear the name Christopher, Christian, Christina, Kirstin, and Chris. One of them is Christopher Bledsoe Sr.!
He and several other witnesses had bizarre experiences at the Cape Fear River in North Carolina. Frightening things at the Fear River—the NAME GAME refuses to stop!
Shortly thereafter, two owls moved into his garden and one into the adjacent woods. Bledsoe spent his whole life in the area—he had never noticed owls there before! Now he had three of them on his hands all at once! [p. 115]
The suspicion expressed by abductees that "aliens" could also take the form of "owls" as shapeshifters is probably based on the Roman legend of the STRIX.
A female vampire who flies through the night as an owl to suck the blood of babies! According to Jewish tradition, Adam's first wife Lilith was able to take the form of an owl in order to steal children—an interesting parallel to the "owled" Greys of the present day, who are out and about as child thieves, among other things, today! [p. 165]
Synchronicities and the Mothman
During my last interview on CROPfm, Podcaster Tarek pointed out to me that in connection with the Mothman, a bizarre woman had appeared in Point Pleasant.
An African American woman in plumage who called herself "Moon Owl" and claimed to have arrived in a UFO. Even if one had simply been dealing with an eccentric person here, the synchronicity is interesting.
Worldwide, owls represent knowledge or the acquisition of knowledge in almost all cultures, and they are regarded as messengers of death [Silver Bridge!], or as "soul transporters" among the Amerindians in the American Sierras! [p. 169]
Years after the Mothman, Keelian events occurred once again not far from the hotspot on the Ohio River. An abductee, who only a few days prior had encountered a flying ball of light during an overland drive—resulting in two hours of Missing Time—was on the road by car once again.
Standing on the road ahead of him was a four-foot [about 120 cm] tall owl staring at him. Following his encounter, he did some research and discovered that "giant owls" of four feet and larger were repeatedly out and about as hitchhikers in the area! [p. 218]
Insights through Reverse Speech
The American researchers Eve Lorgen and Patricia Mason have their own unique way of dealing with the abduction phenomenon: They rely on reverse speech, meaning they run the recorded witness statements backward. What can be heard in the process curiously often recalls elements of Indigenous shamanism. For instance, "wolves" and "owls" are repeatedly mentioned unconsciously:
Forward: "Part of it is truth detracting, trying to get people away from...". Backward: "My fair Wolf speaking up. He passed his truth to the girl".
Forward: "...under the black light". Backward: "The Owl called within in".
Forward: "...pretty lights...". Backward: "The Owl lead her".
Forward: "...and having this face with these two eyes...". Backward: "See Owl. Wishes you could see it. Send me back a net." [p. 311]
The findings cited here are merely a fraction of what is available to the researchers. It is strange that animal forms are described in connection with UFOs at all; the fact that they are also unconsciously implemented in the spoken accounts makes the story even more dubious!ʬ
